A Park Grows in the Park City!

Yesterday morning, the Avangrid Foundation, United Illuminating (UI) and Southern CT Gas (SCG) staff were on hand to celebrate the launch of the re-imagined Johnson Oak Park in the East end of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The park includes features like a playground, paths, a living classroom, community garden, bioswales and a pavilion.

The Foundation, in partnership with UI/SCG, donated $50,000 in 2018 in an effort to bring the park to life via the Connecticut office of the Trust for Public Land (TPL) and their many partners, including the City of Bridgeport and members of the East End Neighborhood Revitalization Zone.

Bridgeport, known as the “Park City” for its history of preserving green space in Connecticut’s largest city, has renewed efforts to invest in parks for its residents. The Johnson Oak Park, which also serves as a playground space for the Jettie S. Tisdale School, will serve more than 3400 residents of a historically African-American neighborhood and approximately 700 students of the K-8 school.

The project is part of the TPL’s nationwide effort to make parks available to every person in the United States within a 10 minute walk of their home.

Preserving and improving urban green spaces is important to the Foundation in support of the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals including
