AVANGRID & the World's Most Ethical Companies
By Alistair Raymond, VP-Chief Compliance Officer
AVANGRID and its subsidiaries are committed to maintaining the highest standards for ethical conduct and compliance with the law. This commitment comes from the recognition that our companies provide a life necessity - safe and reliable energy - to over 3.2 million customers. We also recognize that, as one of the country’s largest generators of clean renewable energy, AVANGRID must be a leader in combating climate change and helping our communities to a healthier sustainable energy future.
These efforts are being noticed. I am proud to share that the Ethisphere Institute, a global thought-leader in the field of corporate ethics, has named AVANGRID to its 2019 list of the World’s Most Ethical Companies®. This list includes other companies leading the way in corporate ethics such as 3M, AARP, Microsoft, and Visa. Click here for Ethisphere’s press release, with remarks from the CEOs of honorees IBM, T-Mobile, and Sony Corporation.
For 2019, Ethisphere designated 128 honorees in 21 countries and 50 countries, based on a rigorous assessment of their organizational culture, corporate citizenship and responsibility, corporate governance practices, ethics and compliance programs, leadership activities, and overall reputation. AVANGRID was one of only six companies to make the list in the Energy & Utilities sector.
Ethisphere has published a research report sharing its insights into this year’s honorees, Leading Practices and Trends from the 2019 World’s Most Ethical Companies®, including our recognition of the importance of diversity, transparency, and continuous improvement in developing a first-class organization. As a demonstration of AVANGRID’s own commitment to transparency, you will find a description of our compliance and ethics program on our public website, with annual reports that describe our program activities and initiatives that introduce best practices in this field.
AVANGRID’s keys to success have been the unwavering support of leadership and our employees, and a commitment to mission. We have also focused on continuous improvement, even in areas where our corporate governance and ethics activities are already very strong. These improvements are proposed each year in an activity plan approved by our Board of Directors. Here are a few examples of initiatives we added this year:
After years of fine-tuning our online ethics training, we expanded our efforts to a new in-person ethics training delivered locally to employees. These trainings are tailored by location and introduce key behavioral ethics principles that our employees find interesting and engaging. Instant polling and group discussions have added to the interactivity and feedback.
Industry research and our own internal surveys recognize a positive correlation between ethical culture and a manager’s prioritization of discussing ethical issues. To support managers in this area, we have developed a “manager’s ethics toolkit” with easy-to-use resources for discussing ethics topics in team meetings.
The World’s Most Ethical Companies® distinction follows years of dedication by our employees to support a collaborative and ethical culture, our tireless leadership in the global effort to promote sustainable renewable energy, and genuine commitments to diversity, integrity, and transparency. To all of our employees and other stakeholders, thank you for your support of ethics and compliance at AVANGRID.
